Encounters – Nordic Photography Beyond Borders is about encounters on several levels. The exhibition is a meeting between five visual artists from five Nordic countries, but also a meeting between Nordic and other cultures, between divergent artistic sensibilities, diverse socialities and between the private and the official. Overall, the exhibition can be seen as an exploration of identity and the political potential of art, understood as how to talk about and set current agendas with a visual language. Many of the works in the exhibition are each in their own way about where we are, where we are going and where we are coming from.
Encounters – Nordic Photography Beyond Borders is the result of a curatorial cooperation between Dragana Vujanović Östlind, Louise Wolthers and Sara Walker from the Hasselblad Foundation, Göteborg, Sweden, Jóhanna Gudrún Árnadóttir from Reykjavík Fotomuseum, Iceland, Tiina Rauhala, The Finish Museum of Photography, Helsinki, Finland and Susanne Saether from Henie Onstad Kunstsenter, Oslo, Norway and Kristine Kern from Fotografisk Center, Copenhagen. The exhibition has received support from the A.P. Møller Foundation, the Embassy of Sweden, Copenhagen, the City of Copenhagen, the Committee for Visual Art in Copenhagen and the Danish Arts Foundation
